  Velscope Velscope is a tool for detecting early stages of oral cancer. Historically, dental providers have screened for oral cancer through pressing on certain parts of your neck & mouth and through visual examination both intraorally and extraorally. This type of oral cancer screening allowed us to diagnose oral cancer when it was at a stage 3 or a stage 4. Because oral cancer multiplies very quickly, a stage 3 or stage 4 means that in order to save a life, large portions of cancerous areas had to be removed (i.e. large portions of tongue, jaws, cheeks, lips, etc). And sometimes, the cancer had progressed to so many areas, so quickly, that it was too late.
The creation of Velscope has changed oral cancer screenings, allowing us to see underneath tissues and membranes, giving us the ability to see cancer at its earliest stages--even precancerous stages. This means we can now save lives!
